The Hanover Insurance Group Announces Leadership Transition
The Hanover Insurance Group has announced the impending retirement of John "Jack" C. Roche, the company's president and CEO, effective December 31, 2026. Serving as a conclusion to his remarkable 40-year career in the insurance industry, this transition highlights the Board's decision to appoint Richard "Dick" W. Lavey as CEO-elect. Lavey, currently the chief operating officer and president of Hanover Agency Markets, will work closely with Roche to ensure a seamless leadership transition.
Roche's tenure at The Hanover began in 2006, and he has served as president and CEO since 2017. Under his leadership, the company achieved record operating earnings and improved its stock market performance. These accomplishments have solidified The Hanover's reputation as a top property and casualty insurer within the independent agency channel. Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Roche contributes to the insurance industry through roles with The Institutes and the American Property Casualty Insurance Association, among others.
Lavey joined The Hanover in 2004, and over his 22-year career, he has assumed numerous senior leadership positions. As chief operating officer, he has driven innovation by integrating business operations with technology. His leadership in Hanover Agency Markets involves managing the growth of core commercial and personal lines, which account for 75% of The Hanover’s $7 billion in consolidated gross premiums written.
Before his tenure at The Hanover, Lavey held significant roles in sales, distribution, marketing, and strategy with major players including The Hartford and The Travelers Insurance Company. His academic credentials include a graduation from The College of Holy Cross and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Additionally, Lavey is a former chairman of the board for the National Council on Compensation Insurance.
Cynthia L. Egan, chair of The Hanover's board, commended Roche’s contributions and highlighted Lavey's capability, stating that his expertise in strategic growth and technology will further the company’s progress. Roche expressed pride in his accomplishments and confidence in Lavey's capacity to lead during this transition.
Lavey remarked on his future role, expressing honor to guide The Hanover during this transformative era, with a focus on accelerating growth and performance. The company is also expanding its application of artificial intelligence in underwriting and claims, emphasizing submission intake and prioritization. Moreover, with the launch of Hanover Specialty Industrial Property Advantage, The Hanover is enhancing its offerings for complex, mid-size life sciences operations.
