John C. Roche Retirement Announcement at The Hanover Insurance Group
The Hanover Insurance Group has announced the planned retirement of John C. Roche, its president and chief executive officer, set for December 31, 2026. Roche has dedicated 40 years to the insurance industry, with his tenure at The Hanover beginning in 2006. He ascended to the roles of president and CEO in 2017, during which the company reported significant achievements such as record operating earnings and enhanced stock performance, while solidifying its status within the property/casualty insurance sector via the independent agency channel.
To ensure a smooth transition, Richard W. Lavey, presently chief operating officer and president of Hanover Agency Markets, has been appointed as CEO-elect. In anticipation of his new role, Lavey will work closely with Roche over the coming years. Roche expressed his confidence in Lavey's capabilities, citing their longstanding professional collaboration over two decades, and noted the company's robust financial health and talented workforce as key factors for future success.
Lavey, who joined The Hanover in 2004, has occupied several critical leadership roles, including chief marketing officer and president of Hanover Agency Markets. His responsibilities as COO have involved overseeing the strategic evolution of the company’s operating model and enhancing business and technology integration. Before his time at The Hanover, Lavey gained extensive experience in leadership roles with companies such as The Hartford and The Travelers Insurance Company. He also has served as the chairman of the board for the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI).
