Gaston County Allocates $5M for Schools, Enhances Teacher Pay and Benefits

In a recent decision, the Gaston County Board of Commissioners allocated an additional $5 million to Gaston County Schools (GCS) for fiscal year 2027, which began on July 1. This significant funding boost follows extensive discussions between county officials and school district representatives over two months, aiming to address essential needs within the district.

Hiring and Compensation Enhancements

The board's funding strategy focuses on four primary objectives. First, $1,042,000 is earmarked to match state employee pay increases, ensuring equitable raises for locally-paid employees. Additionally, $1,570,000 covers state-mandated benefit increases, addressing higher health insurance premiums and retirement contributions. A historic investment of $2,113,000 has been allocated for teacher salaries, marking the largest one-time increase in county-funded teacher salary supplements to enhance teacher retention and recruitment despite challenges from nearby counties.

Sustaining Operational Excellence

Furthermore, $275,000 is designated to maintain operations at W.B. Beam Intermediate, supporting the school's function through the 2026-27 academic year amid consolidation considerations. While these funds address pressing needs, they also deplete the County's General Fund reserves, underscoring the necessity for long-term financial planning. County Manager Matt Rhoten cited prudent financial management measures, including departmental restructuring and project deferments, as key strategies for enabling these initiatives without compromising fiscal stability.
