Maximize Your Medicare Benefits: A Guide for Open Enrollment 2027

With the approach of the 2027 Medicare open enrollment period, from October 15 to December 7, 2026, individuals aged 65 or older will have the chance to enroll, re-enroll, or modify their federally managed health insurance plans. Whitney Stidom, vice president of consumer enablement at eHealth, advises beneficiaries to use this time wisely by utilizing preventive care benefits available under their current plans and assessing changes in their health or financial situation.

Medicare participants typically receive an annual notice of change in September, detailing modifications or discontinuations in their current plans. Stidom emphasizes reviewing this notice carefully due to significant changes in Medicare plans that might necessitate selecting a new option for 2027.

Medicare Plan Options

Medicare offers several plan choices, including Parts A, B, C (Medicare Advantage), and D, which covers prescription drugs. Additionally, the Medicare Supplement plan, or Medigap, is available to cover out-of-pocket costs such as coinsurance and deductibles. Plan selection may depend on factors like income levels and health needs. Stidom suggests that Medicare Advantage plans are often preferred by those on a fixed income, while those with greater financial flexibility might choose to combine Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement and Part D plan for broader coverage.

Stidom advises enrolling in Medicare Supplement plans upon first eligibility to avoid medical underwriting, which could result in higher premiums or denial of coverage based on medical history.

Currently, the projected standard monthly premium for Medicare Part B in 2027 is approximately $209.50, reflecting a slight increase from 2026. The accurate premium rate will be confirmed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services later in the year.

To manage potential cost increases and changes in coverage, Stidom urges Medicare beneficiaries to annually review their plan options considering any personal health and financial changes. This proactive approach ensures that their coverage remains aligned with their current needs, offering flexibility not always available in Medicare Advantage plans, which are limited to specific provider networks.

Industry experts recommend annual plan reviews due to changes in personal circumstances and potential shifts in plan offerings, ensuring optimal selection for beneficiaries.
