Oklahoma Seniors Benefit from New Medicare Advantage Reporting Framework
In Oklahoma City, recent data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) reveals that over 350,000 seniors in Oklahoma have enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans. This surge in enrollment has highlighted concerns about plan modifications, denied claims, and the accessibility of healthcare services. To address these challenges, a new reporting framework has been implemented through a partnership between the Oklahoma Insurance Department (OID) and the Oklahoma Health Care Authority.
This innovative system includes a reporting form that Medicare Advantage members can use to communicate their issues or propose adjustments to their plans. These submissions are directly forwarded to CMS, the agency responsible for overseeing Medicare Advantage plans.
State and Federal Collaboration
Glen Mulready, the Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner, emphasized the importance of state involvement. He stated, "Since I’ve been in office, I have traveled each year to Washington, D.C., asking for states to have more authority in Medicare Advantage because no one understands the needs of Oklahoma seniors better than Oklahoma." Mulready highlighted that while the federal government regulates Medicare Advantage, this cooperative effort showcases the benefits of state and federal collaboration, providing Oklahoma seniors a direct channel to CMS to express their concerns.
Advocacy for Seniors
Clay Bullard, Cabinet Secretary of Health and Mental Health and CEO of the Oklahoma Health Care Authority, echoed this sentiment. He mentioned that this collaboration grants the state a proactive role in monitoring issues and advocating for solutions at the federal level.
Governor Stitt had previously issued Executive Order 2026-01 to encourage state and federal officials to find a durable solution for these challenges faced by Oklahoma seniors. With the new process established, the executive order has been rescinded, paving the way for a permanent approach.
