Insurance Demand Surge Driven by AI and Energy Sector Growth

The Swiss Re Institute highlights that the swift development of AI infrastructure and advancements in energy systems are driving a surge in insurance demand, primarily due to new, complex data centers. This growth occurs amid geopolitical tensions that increase risk in global markets. Swiss Re's "World Insurance in 2026: Shock absorbers in a fragmenting world" report foresees a decline in real global premium growth from 3.9% in 2025 to 1.3% in 2026, with a slight rise to 1.6% in 2027 across both life and non-life segments.

For life insurance, projected growth in real premiums is expected to drop to 0.6% by 2026. This decline is attributed to competitive pricing and economic slowdowns, alongside increased claims severity. However, global life insurance premiums will experience a less drastic decrease from 4% in 2025 to 2.3%, as life insurers face less impact from supply shocks compared to non-life insurers.

Jérôme Haegeli, Swiss Re Group's chief economist, remarked on geopolitical risks as a constant factor in the global economy, emphasizing insurance's role in managing these risks. He noted that insurance aids economic transformation by de-risking investments in AI infrastructure, energy systems, and supply chains. Swiss Re estimates AI data center investments will reach $750 billion by 2026, boosting U.S. economic growth by 0.2% to 0.3%.

While commercial and personal insurance rates are expected to remain low in 2026 and 2027, competitive pressures could impact these rates. Despite potential affordability challenges, the life insurance sector is forecasted to maintain resilience, with stable premium growth around 2% through 2027. Investment yields and the ongoing AI investment surge are set to enhance profitability in this segment.

Ivan Gonzalez, CEO of Swiss Re Corporate Solutions, emphasized the demand for specialized solutions due to increased infrastructure investments, particularly AI data centers with significant asset values. He highlighted that these complex exposures require innovative insurance solutions, which integrate risk engineering and alternative risk transfer mechanisms for enhanced business resilience.
