In Memoriam: John Walter 'Jack' Barton, A Life of Dedication

John Walter "Jack" "Rabbit" Barton, esteemed in the Houma, Louisiana, community, passed away on July 5, 2026, at 85. A graduate of Crystal City High School, Barton pursued higher education at Nicholls State University on a basketball scholarship. His prowess as a point guard from 1961 to 1965 led to his 2005 induction into the university's Athletics Hall of Fame. Barton's lifelong dedication to Nicholls athletics was evident as he avidly attended games each season.

Following his college years, Barton embarked on a career with Magcobar Dresser Industries, a pivotal company in the oil and gas sector. His roles included petroleum mud engineer, salesman, and seaplane pilot. However, the industry downturn in the 1980s prompted Barton to transition to life insurance and pre-need funeral plan sales, where his meticulous nature and dedication earned him multiple awards and opportunities for international travel.

Born on March 25, 1941, Barton was the son of Walter S. "Dubbs" Barton and Jeanette "Janie" Magre Barton and was raised in Crystal City, Texas. He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara "Bobbie" Clement Barton. He is survived by his three children, Kelly Barton Theriot, Stephanie Barton Maxwell, and John Scott Barton, six grandchildren, a great-granddaughter, a sister, and numerous extended family members. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 18, at Samart Funeral Home of Houma, providing an opportunity to honor Barton's lasting influence.
