Kia America Recall Notice for Telluride SUVs: Safety Risks and Insurance Implications
Kia America has initiated a significant recall for nearly 463,000 Telluride SUVs spanning model years 2020 through 2024. This action stems from the risk of the front power seat motor overheating, which could potentially lead to a fire. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) advises owners to park these vehicles outside and away from structures until the necessary repairs are completed.
The issue arises when the power seat switch is dislodged or damaged if the knob is accidentally hit, causing the seat motor to run continuously and risk overheating. This hazard exists whether the vehicle is in motion or stationary. Notably, similar models experienced a recall in 2024 for this defect, and some vehicles might have received inadequate fixes, highlighting the importance of verifying recall status.
Kia dealers are prepared to install an electronic fuse assembly to prevent continuous running of the seat motor if the switch is compromised, providing this repair at no cost to vehicle owners. Notification letters will begin mailing on August 13, but owners can use the NHTSA's recall lookup tool with their vehicle identification number (VIN) or contact a Kia dealership to proactively check for open recalls. While the recall does not currently advise against driving Tellurides, owners should remain vigilant for signs of overheating, such as unusual heat or a burning smell, and discontinue use if these signs are present.
Owners are strongly encouraged to verify their vehicle’s recall status even if past recall work was performed, ensuring that safety measures are current. Additionally, maintaining comprehensive auto insurance can offer financial protection against unexpected events, providing reassurance alongside the recall servicing process.
