Freeway Insurance Expands Franchise Operations in California and Alabama

Freeway Insurance has aggressively expanded its franchise operations, opening five new locations in California and Alabama. This strategic expansion capitalizes on regulatory opportunities and an increase in minimum liability limits, particularly impacting the non-standard insurance market. Regulatory shifts and reduced offerings from standard carriers, often due to wildfire risks, have heightened demand for non-standard coverage. In Alabama, a significant uninsured driver rate of approximately 18% further fuels the need for alternative insurance solutions.

The expansion highlights the trend of growing demand for non-standard insurance products as standard providers reduce their market presence. Franchise distribution emerges as a key strategy for accessing this untapped market. Over the past two years, Freeway, a division of Confie, has expanded its franchise network by 174%, now operating 75 franchises across 28 states. New locations in Millbrook, Alabama, and California cities such as Clovis, Brentwood, Pomona, and Galt are all locally owned.

Since 1987, Freeway has been dedicated to delivering auto insurance tailored for drivers needing specialized coverage, including those with previous violations or SR-22 requirements. The non-standard driver demographic now represents over a third of the insurance market, especially as prominent insurers retract from key areas like California.

Independent agents dominate a significant portion of U.S. personal lines premiums, yet franchise models are increasingly capturing market share. The consolidation trend among larger brokerages presents an opportunity for franchises and cluster models to meet the needs of local markets and new business owners. Freeway's primary competitors in the non-standard segment include Pronto Insurance, especially popular within Hispanic communities, alongside other franchises like Brightway and Goosehead.

Alex Trachtman, Freeway's senior vice president of franchise sales and operations, underscored the company’s pledge to support franchisees through comprehensive frameworks and mentorship to ensure business success. Moreover, Freeway's recent role as NASCAR's Premier Partner for the Cup Series, following collaborations with Trackhouse Racing and Spire Motorsports, bolsters national brand visibility, aiding franchise recruitment.

Confie's history of private equity engagement, highlighted by a notable 2021 merger with Alliant Insurance Services supported by Stone Point Capital, reinforces its strategic positioning and growth trajectory within the dynamic insurance sector.
