Pennsylvania Initiative for Women's Preventive Health Services

The Pennsylvania Insurance Department (PID), alongside the Department of Health (DOH), Department of Human Services (DHS), and the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Women, has launched a statewide initiative to educate women about no-cost preventive health services available through their insurance plans. This initiative responds to a recent PID survey revealing that 31% of women in Pennsylvania lack full awareness of these services offered under the Affordable Care Act.

Michael Humphreys, Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner, highlighted the administration's outreach efforts to close the knowledge gap about essential preventive services provided at no extra cost. He noted that increasing awareness can significantly improve health outcomes for women, making these life-saving services more accessible.

The PID secured a $635,352 federal grant from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to boost access to critical women's health benefits. The funding supports a campaign that will run until September 2026, dedicated to enhancing education and awareness surrounding preventive care.

Women’s Health Insurance Tour

The women’s health insurance tour, scheduled to continue through September, will visit various regions across Pennsylvania. Attendees will receive information on preventive care and have the opportunity to share their experiences with the health insurance system. The tour schedule is available on the PID’s website.

Dr. Debra Bogen, Secretary of Health, emphasized preventive care's role in addressing major health issues like cancer and heart disease, highlighting the benefits of early detection. For uninsured or underinsured women, the Department of Health provides free screenings for conditions including breast and cervical cancer.

Under the Affordable Care Act, preventive services are offered at no cost through most health insurance plans, facilitating early identification and management of health issues. Women are encouraged to take full advantage of these benefits and schedule recommended screenings.

Dr. Val Arkoosh, DHS Secretary, emphasized ongoing initiatives to enhance women’s health across Pennsylvania, such as the Women’s Health Services Grant and expanded access to maternal health services. These programs play a vital role, and women are urged to utilize their available coverage.

Ashley Walkowiak, Executive Director of the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Women, stressed the need for informed and accessible care, noting that increased awareness leads to better health outcomes. For more information on these initiatives or insurance queries, individuals can visit the PID website or contact the helpline.
