Fracture Incidence and Mortality Risks in Older Adults: Implications for Insurance

A recent study offers detailed insights into fracture incidence and mortality risks among older adults in Taiwan, leveraging data from 2015 to 2020. Utilizing records from the National Health Insurance Research Database and Taiwan Cause of Death Statistics, the research focused on individuals aged 65 and above, who were hospitalized for fractures for the first time. The study identified key trends that could influence insurance carriers' approach to risk management in this demographic.

Among the 3,778,382 older adults studied, 773,538 fracture events were recorded, leading to an incidence rate of 3,685.8 per 100,000 person-years. Women experienced higher fracture rates than men, with incidence rates of 5,061.2 compared to 2,344.1 per 100,000 person-years, respectively. Mortality rates post-fracture were noted as 1.73% within 30 days and 8.99% within a year, emphasizing the importance of timely claim processing and effective care provider collaboration.

The multivariate Cox regression analysis identified factors such as male gender, advanced age, lower income, reduced urbanization, and higher comorbidity scores as significantly increasing mortality risk. Specific injuries like intracranial and cervical spine showed a strong correlation with mortality, necessitating targeted regulatory compliance measures for these high-risk groups. The principal causes of death shifted from accidental injuries to cardiovascular diseases and malignant neoplasms over time, highlighting the critical role of active rehabilitation in enhancing survival outcomes.
