North Carolina Governor Signs Executive Order to Combat Health Care Costs
Governor Josh Stein of North Carolina has taken a definitive step to combat rising health care costs by signing Executive Order No. 39, initiating the Health Care Affordability Commission. This newly established body, representing diverse sectors within the health care system, focuses on finding practical solutions to curb escalating expenses. Co-chaired by State Treasurer Brad Briner and NC Secretary of Health and Human Services Dev Sangvai, the commission marks a collaborative effort to enhance health care affordability.
Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, Governor Stein commended Secretary Sangvai and Treasurer Briner for their roles in the initiative. Treasurer Briner, overseeing health care coverage for over 750,000 state employees and families, stressed the necessity of counteracting unsustainable cost increases. Secretary Sangvai highlighted the commission's commitment to improving affordability, transparency, and value, aimed at bettering health outcomes across North Carolina.
Health care costs in the United States are notably higher compared to other nations, with average annual expenses reaching almost $16,500 per person. In response, North Carolina has enacted measures like Medicaid expansion through House Bill 696, affecting over 730,000 residents, and a medical debt relief initiative erasing $6.5 billion in debt for 2.5 million citizens. Looking forward, Governor Stein's budget plans for 2026-2027 include full funding for NC Medicaid, strengthening SNAP, and securing access to essential resources. The commission is set to analyze cost-related factors and propose actionable recommendations, and interested parties can review Executive Order No. 39 for more information.
