Legacy of John Charles Prost: A Pillar in Life Insurance and Community
John Charles Prost, a prominent figure in the life insurance sector and the community of Detroit, leaves behind a legacy marked by professional achievements and civic engagement. Born in 1936 in Detroit, Prost was raised by a pioneering mother, following the early death of his father. His mother, Kay Prost, eventually became the general manager of the Detroit Builders Show, inspiring John with her resilience and dedication.
Prost, a Michigan State University alumnus, began his career with entrepreneurial ventures, including a photography business during his college years. He later committed to the life insurance industry, where he held significant positions, serving as President of several prestigious associations. These included the Greater Detroit and Michigan Associations of Life Underwriters and the Financial and Estate Planning Council of Detroit. His distinguished career earned him accolades such as the Man of The Year by insurance associations and induction into the Michigan Insurance Hall of Fame in 2001.
Prost's community involvement was equally impressive. He held prominent roles such as trustee of the City of Detroit pension system and served on multiple advisory committees. His dedication to civic duties extended to his roles as Mayor Pro Tem on the Grosse Pointe Park City Council and as the founder and president of the Grosse Pointe Park Foundation. As a media figure, he hosted community-focused cable television shows for over two decades, featuring notable local personalities.
His affiliations included the Detroit Rotary, where he served as President, and the Detroit Athletic Club, where he was a longstanding member and former President. Prost's involvement in club activities was notable, particularly for leading the DAC Father Daughter Banquet for half a century. His contributions to both professional circles and community activities are well-regarded.
Apart from his professional and civic engagements, Prost had personal interests such as singing with an acapella group and spending time on his boat. A devoted member of St. Ambrose Church, Prost is survived by his wife, Lucinda, daughters Kathryne and Elizabeth, his grandchildren, and an extensive extended family.
Visitation services for Prost are scheduled for July 8 at Chas. Verheyden, Inc., followed by a Funeral Mass on July 9 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Detroit Industrial School or St. Ambrose Church. His contributions to the insurance industry and his community will be fondly remembered and deeply appreciated by many.
