Data following Ivy's passing revealed insufficient awareness about prevention measures among the Sumter population, despite an understanding of rabies risks from bats. With rabies-related fatalities in the U.S. predominantly linked to bat encounters, Durant emphasizes the urgency of improving public health infrastructure and regulatory frameworks.
