WHO Urges Enhanced Newborn Screening Programs to Save Lives
The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged countries to enhance newborn screening programs, aiming to improve early detection and treatment of birth defects. This initiative focuses on mitigating lifelong disabilities and reducing child mortality rates.
A recent WHO report highlights the crucial role of newborn screening in promoting child survival. Early identification of conditions such as congenital hypothyroidism, sickle-cell disease, and metabolic disorders can significantly enhance outcomes. However, many children, especially in low- and middle-income countries, lack timely diagnosis and treatment due to limited healthcare access.
Globally, around 8 million infants are born with birth defects yearly, accounting for nearly 8% of under-five child deaths. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, noted that early detection through newborn screening can prevent disabilities and save lives. Despite this, there is a significant disparity in screening capabilities among countries, with some lacking necessary infrastructure.
The report discusses the increasing proportion of child mortality linked to birth defects, notably in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. This rise is partly due to successful reductions in infectious disease-related deaths. WHO aims to assist health ministries in lower-income regions to prioritize specific conditions based on national needs and resources.
