Midwest Homeowners Concerned About Rising Insurance Costs
A recent survey revealed that 75% of Midwest homeowners are concerned about escalating home insurance premiums. Conducted by Climate Power and the Insurance Fairness Project, the study highlights the desire among homeowners in states like Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas for policy measures to hold utilities, polluters, and insurance firms accountable for contributing to these rising costs.
Mia Logan of Climate Power noted the increasing financial strain on families, emphasizing that homeownership is becoming less attainable. She pointed out that climate change exacerbates financial burdens, resulting in "skyrocketing home insurance premiums." This concern is echoed in a report by Insurify, which showed Iowa's home insurance premiums rose by 28% in 2025, with projections indicating a further increase for single-family homes in 2026.
More than half of the survey respondents expressed worries that rising insurance costs could impact their ability to retain, sell, or improve their homes, citing inflation and insurance practices as key issues. Among Midwest homeowners, 29% reported experiencing severe weather impacts in the last three years, with 74% anticipating more frequent damaging events. Despite these concerns, some areas such as North Carolina and Arizona showed less apprehension about severe weather impacts.
Notably, 60% to 67% of Midwestern respondents felt that elected officials were not adequately addressing insurance costs. There was strong support for policies requiring insurers to disclose how premiums are determined, improve collaboration with officials to mitigate disaster risks, and fund initiatives to strengthen homes against disasters. The survey indicates broad backing for the idea of states seeking compensation from polluters for infrastructure and disaster responses, alongside demands for holding responsible parties accountable for climate-related losses.
TJ Helmstetter of the Insurance Fairness Project remarked that the public is demanding significant solutions to address root causes, advocating for a balanced approach that favors overall welfare over perceived profiteering.
