Medicare Launches GLP-1 Bridge Program for Weight-Loss Medication
A forthcoming Medicare pilot program, known as the GLP-1 Bridge program, will launch on July 1 to enhance weight-loss medication accessibility for individuals under Part D prescription coverage. This initiative will enable eligible Medicare beneficiaries to access specific GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy for a monthly fee of $50. Historically, Medicare has not covered weight-loss medications, making them prohibitively expensive and often unattainable without insurance support.
Set to operate from July 2026 through December 2027, the program is viewed as a significant development by Kinney Drugs, Central New York’s major independent pharmacy chain. John Marraffa, president of Kinney Drugs, highlights this as a landmark event, being the first opportunity for seniors to receive these medications under Medicare coverage.
Eligibility criteria, as outlined by Medicare, involve securing a prescription and processing it through designated pharmacies. Kinney Drugs promises a seamless experience for existing customers with straightforward enrollment procedures. New customers undergo a simple ID verification process. Upon obtaining a prescription, patients will receive direct communication of their enrollment confirmation and prescription readiness, simplifying access to their medication.
Operationally, Kinney pharmacists will manage claim submissions by initially directing them to Medicare, which will likely decline coverage due to standard policies. These claims will then be redirected to the bridge program, removing financial concerns for beneficiaries. The bridge program encompasses several GLP-1 medications, including Wegovy, Foundayo, and Zepbound, with the doctor and patient deciding on the most appropriate option.
The $50 copayment within this program functions independently of other Medicare expenses, not contributing to deductible calculations or reducing overall prescription costs. Kinney Drugs ensures readiness with ample medication stock, reinforcing immediate service delivery upon program commencement.
