Governor Radda's Award: Strides in Health Insurance and UHC in Nigeria
Katsina State's Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, earned a Special Recognition Award at the inaugural National Summit of State Social Health Insurance Agencies (SSHIAs) in Akure, Ondo State. Recognized for advancing healthcare access through medical education, primary healthcare, and digital insurance transparency, Governor Radda's contributions are pivotal for insurance sector improvements within Katsina State.
During the summit, Katsina State Commissioner for Health, Hon. Musa Adamu Funtua, communicated the Governor’s dedication to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) across Nigeria. The administration has prioritized enhancements in primary healthcare, boosting health insurance participation, and fostering community-oriented healthcare initiatives to position healthcare as a fundamental right for all citizens.
Governor Radda highlighted the achievements of the Katsina State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), under Dr. Muhammad Safana's leadership, in expanding health insurance to vulnerable populations. Dr. Safana's election as Chairman of the Forum of State Social Health Insurance Agencies underscores his leadership and national recognition. The Governor also applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's initiative to increase the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) allocation, supporting primary healthcare resources through BHCPF 2.0 implementation by KSCHMA.
In his opening remarks at the summit, Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, called for increased health sector funding, emphasizing the necessity of modern facilities and skilled human resources to tackle Nigeria's healthcare challenges. The summit, spearheaded by Dr. Safana of KSCHMA, was a cornerstone event for stakeholders from all regions, committed to driving Universal Health Coverage forward.
Concluding the summit, discussions centered around collaboration and innovation, with a focus on enhancing state-level health insurance systems to achieve comprehensive nationwide health coverage. SSHIAs have been effective in integrating over 14.1 million Nigerians into health insurance schemes as of April 2026, demonstrating the success of state-driven, community-focused insurance initiatives.
