Challenges Faced by Cibolo Resident with Auto Insurance Claims
A resident of Cibolo, Texas, Margaret Holmes, recently encountered significant challenges navigating her insurance policies after her vehicle was totaled in an accident. Holmes held both a primary auto insurance policy and gap insurance through separate companies. Gap insurance is designed to cover the difference between the primary insurance payout and the remaining balance owed on an auto loan.
In September, Holmes' Nissan Versa suffered severe damage in a crash. Her primary insurer, associated with Liberty Mutual, swiftly settled the claim with a payment exceeding $18,000. However, Holmes faced a remaining balance of over $23,000 on her car loan. The gap insurer, Allstate, required extensive documentation and repeatedly requested additional, itemized paperwork, prolonging the process and involving communications with the car dealership and loan provider.
Frustrated by the delays, Holmes sought assistance from KENS 5, a local news outlet, to address the discrepancy between her insurers' calculations. Upon intervention, her primary insurer unexpectedly issued an additional payment covering the remaining debt. Despite the resolution, neither Liberty Mutual nor Allstate provided explicit details on the process. Allstate did acknowledge the case resolution, while Liberty Mutual declined to comment. Holmes emphasized that media involvement played a crucial role in expediting the resolution, highlighting the challenges of coordinating between primary and gap coverage and the importance of communication and prompt action in insurance claim settlements.
