Missouri Insurers Disburse $2.9 Billion for Storm Damage Claims
The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance (DCI) has revealed that insurers have disbursed $2.9 billion for storm damage claims statewide in 2025. Among these, $475 million was allocated for 10,000 claims after a tornado struck St. Louis on May 16. Despite insurance coverage, numerous policyholders have voiced concerns over AI-driven prior authorization delays and inadequate settlements.
DCI Director Angela Nelson highlighted that the affected region included many uninsured properties, with overall damage estimates in St. Louis reaching approximately $1.6 billion. Addressing these challenges, U.S. Senator Josh Hawley formally queried State Farm, criticizing the insurer for inadequate claim evaluations. Hawley emphasized the regulatory compliance requirements for insurers to honor claims appropriately.
State Farm responded by affirming their commitment to affected communities and denying delay accusations. The insurer reported managing around 20,400 claims and disbursing over $360 million. In efforts to improve disaster resilience, State Farm calls for collaboration among stakeholders to mitigate future storm impacts. Meanwhile, DCI has successfully recovered $46 million in 2025 via mediation efforts across various insurance types, encouraging those facing claims challenges to contact their hotline for support.
