Zurich Insurance Expands Data-Center Insurance Offerings in Europe and South America
Zurich Insurance Group Plc is expanding its insurance offerings for data-center projects into Europe and South America. This strategic move is driven by the rising global infrastructure fueled by advancements in artificial intelligence. Zurich's initiative includes providing insurance coverage for data center construction and operations in countries such as Brazil, Germany, Italy, the Nordic countries, and Spain, complementing its established presence in the United States. The company also plans to broaden its reach to additional countries this year.
The expansion aligns with the rapid progress of AI technology worldwide, as major tech companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet explore AI applications in diverse sectors. In tandem, the European Union is enhancing its digital infrastructure to secure technological autonomy amid geopolitical challenges. Insurance providers such as Zurich are increasing risk coverage for data centers to tap into new revenue streams, responding to a slowing growth in traditional property and casualty insurance premiums.
According to a report by Artemis, citing Aon Plc, global insurance premiums tied to data centers are expected to reach $134 billion from 2026 to 2030. In 2025, Zurich reported underwriting over 245 data-center construction projects in the United States, boosting its first-quarter earnings. Earlier this year, Zurich strengthened its cyber and digital insurance capabilities by acquiring UK-based specialty insurer Beazley. This acquisition not only enhances Zurich's expertise but expands its operations in Europe, North America, Latin America, and Asia, and provides access to Beazley's positions within Lloyd’s of London.
