Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program: Improved Access to Weight Loss Treatments
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program, running from July 1, 2026, to December 31, 2027, will offer reduced costs for specific GLP-1 medications to eligible Medicare beneficiaries. This initiative aims to enhance access to effective weight-loss treatments for older adults diagnosed with obesity and other related conditions, such as hypertension.
Beneficiaries will be able to access these medications, including Wegovy, Ozempic, and Zepbound—commonly used for managing Type 2 diabetes—at an estimated cost of $50 per month. These drugs play a critical role in appetite regulation and weight reduction, which are essential for improving health outcomes like mobility and cardiovascular health.
Eligibility for this temporary program requires enrollment in Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage, with prior authorization from a healthcare provider. Such authorization ensures patients receive proper lifestyle guidance alongside medication use. Healthcare providers must document the medical necessity of these treatments.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) underscore this program as a bridge to the broader BALANCE Model, with plans to negotiate drug prices with manufacturers for long-term decision-making regarding obesity treatment coverage. CMS will also host webinars to provide further details about eligibility and authorization processes.
Healthcare providers are encouraged to assess whether their patients with obesity are candidates for the program, evaluating factors such as potential side effects and the need for ongoing medical supervision. Eligible beneficiaries should consult their healthcare providers to discuss treatment options and lifestyle changes to maximize health benefits alongside medication use.
