Protect Our Care Raises Awareness of Health Care Changes Affecting Millions
In June, the advocacy group Protect Our Care is raising awareness about the effects of recent legislative changes, as the one-year anniversary of a pivotal health care bill approaches on July 4th. Last summer, budget reductions were enacted, impacting Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, resulting in the removal of over $1 trillion in funding. These budgetary adjustments were accompanied by tax benefits for corporate entities.
As a result, nearly 15 million Americans are expected to lose their health coverage, with approximately 3.5 million already experiencing a loss of coverage that was previously deemed essential. There has been an increase in premiums and out-of-pocket expenses, leading some insurance providers to withdraw from particular markets, subsequently narrowing consumer choices. This situation has placed considerable strain on rural hospitals, nursing homes, and community health centers, forcing some to reduce services or cease operations altogether.
Brad Woodhouse, President of Protect Our Care, stated, “One year ago, significant cuts were made despite opposition from working families nationwide. The scaling back of Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act resulted in another major tax break for billionaires and corporations, despite warnings of dire consequences. As we approach the anniversary of these changes, millions of Americans face coverage loss and rising costs. The situation is critical for numerous healthcare facilities and families striving to obtain necessary care.”
During June, Protect Our Care is engaging with the public to highlight these issues, planning a series of thematic weeks to increase awareness about hospital challenges, premium increases, and the effects of healthcare policy changes. By drawing attention to the complexities of regulatory compliance requirements and insurance repercussions, they aim to foster a deeper understanding of the ongoing challenges in the healthcare sector.
