RWJBarnabas Health Street Medicine Program for Homeless Care

RWJBarnabas Health has introduced an innovative "Street Medicine" program aimed at delivering healthcare services to people experiencing homelessness in Union County, New Jersey. This groundbreaking initiative deploys a mobile unit manned by healthcare professionals, including physicians and residents, to provide on-site medical care within shelters, transitional housing, and encampments. This approach not only addresses critical healthcare needs but also enhances healthcare accessibility for underserved populations.

Dr. Edward Egan, M.D., the program director, emphasized the significant barriers to healthcare access faced by unhoused individuals. "This program will make a meaningful difference in our patients’ lives and help prevent hospitalizations," he stated. The initiative covers treatment for wounds, infections, and chronic illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension, and offers vaccinations, preventive screenings, and medication assistance. Importantly, the program includes mental health support by connecting patients with essential counseling and recovery services.

Beyond immediate medical care, the program supports patients in enrolling in Medicaid, obtaining identification, and accessing food and housing resources, which are vital for long-term stability. Balpreet Grewal-Virk, senior vice president for community health at RWJBarnabas, underscored trust's critical role in the program's success, highlighting the importance of building relationships within the communities served. Aligning with RWJBarnabas Health's Our Healthy Communities mission, the initiative has garnered significant proposed funding from the state government and represents a proactive approach to New Jersey's rising homelessness crisis.
