Homeowner Anxiety Report 2026: Understanding Stress in Homeownership

Owning a home is a pivotal component of financial stability, yet it often brings significant stress to many homeowners. According to Hippo Insurance's 2026 Homeowner Anxiety Report, 25% of homeowners report that stress related to homeownership greatly affects their quality of life. Nearly 20% even view homeownership as their primary source of stress, comparable to work or relationships.

The report highlights that younger generations, particularly Gen Z and millennials, experience greater stress, with 76% reporting negative impacts on their well-being. This contrasts with 51% of baby boomers and Gen X experiencing similar feelings. Economic uncertainty and rising costs for maintenance, insurance, and utilities contribute significantly to this stress.

Anna Hargraves Hall, a real estate agent with The Halls NYC Team at Compass, notes that younger homeowners are entering a market where starter homes were historically more affordable. With the median first-time homebuyer age now at 40, younger buyers face higher stress levels when transitioning from renting to owning, often constrained by increased living costs and elevated property prices.

In addition to financial strains, societal expectations, amplified by social media, can exacerbate stress for younger homeowners. Hargraves Hall also highlights the pressure from unrealistic portrayals of home luxury that can increase anxiety among younger demographics.

Home maintenance costs are another source of anxiety. A Lombardo Homes study found that 81% of respondents noted increases in housing expenses over the last three years. Home repair costs, including structural and plumbing repairs, have risen significantly, posing additional financial burdens, particularly for older homeowners on fixed incomes, affecting both mental well-being and property values.

Despite these challenges, 97% of respondents in the Hippo survey find homeownership worthwhile, citing family stability, pride in ownership, and wealth accumulation as significant benefits. Hank Orenstein, a real estate broker with The Corcoran Group, emphasizes that homeownership provides stability unattainable with renting, offering both psychological and financial advantages.

To address homeowner anxiety, experts suggest budgeting 1% of a home's value for annual maintenance, or increasing to 2-3% if feasible, while considering DIY solutions for minor repairs. Orenstein also advises maintaining open communication with supportive individuals and considering professional mental health support to manage the stress associated with homeownership.
