Federal Funding for Rural Healthcare Enhancements in Rhode Island
At a recent gathering at Hope Valley's Wood River Health facility, Congressman Seth Magaziner announced the acquisition of $750,000 in federal funding aimed at enhancing healthcare services in Washington County, Rhode Island. This allocation, part of the government’s Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations, will support Wood River Health in upgrading its facilities to better serve the growing patient population, particularly seniors.
During a visit in early 2025, Magaziner discussed the influence of recent adjustments to healthcare programs such as the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid, and Medicare. He highlighted how these changes have begun impacting rural health facilities in Rhode Island, noting financial strains and the loss of health coverage for thousands. These changes point to a need for effective risk management strategies among healthcare providers.
Alison L. Croke, President and CEO of Wood River Health, noted that the center served approximately 12,000 unique patients last year, offering services including medical, dental, and behavioral health care. She emphasized the importance of facility expansions to improve patient intake and comfort, especially in a waiting area that experiences high occupancy. The upcoming construction project aims to proceed without facility interruptions and is set for a competitive bid this summer, drawing interest from contractors experienced in healthcare projects.
Rep. Samuel Azzinaro, also a patient at Wood River Health, expressed the community's satisfaction with the funding, underscoring the importance of maintaining accessible healthcare in Westerly. Magaziner reaffirmed his commitment to supporting rural healthcare institutions and cited the Rural Health Transformation Program, which has allocated $50 billion nationwide to bolster rural healthcare from 2026 to 2030. Rhode Island is slated to receive a substantial portion of these funds, promising further enhancements to its local healthcare infrastructure.
