Affordable GLP-1 Medications for Medicare Beneficiaries
Medicare beneficiaries can access GLP-1 medications for type 2 diabetes, but using these drugs for weight loss is expensive due to limited coverage. Currently, Medicare Part D plans do not include GLP-1 medications for weight loss. An upcoming initiative may offer seniors a more affordable option for these medications.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services introduced a program in December aimed at enabling Part D plan administrators to cover GLP-1 medications for weight loss by 2027, although it faces indefinite delays. The GLP-1 Bridge program, launched in July, seeks to fill this void. Originally a six-month plan, it now extends to the end of 2027.
The GLP-1 Bridge program allows Medicare beneficiaries coverage for weight loss-related GLP-1 prescriptions, contingent on a doctor's prescription and prior authorization submission. However, expenditures for these medications won't count toward the Medicare Part D out-of-pocket maximum, possibly increasing annual healthcare costs.
Other insurance policies might provide additional coverage options. Beneficiaries should consult with their insurers about coverage possibilities and out-of-pocket costs. For those paying without insurance, comparing pharmacy prices or inquiring about discounts from drug manufacturers could lead to savings. Platforms like GoodRx also offer coupon options for prescriptions.
For more information on how these options affect Medicare beneficiaries, contacting the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is recommended.
