Understanding the Misconceptions of Homeowners and Auto Insurance

A recent survey has revealed significant misunderstandings among American consumers regarding the coverage details of standard homeowners and auto insurance policies. Conducted by Trusted Choice, representing the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America Inc., the survey uncovered that many policyholders are unclear about their coverage, particularly concerning flood damage, rebuilding costs, and common policy exclusions.

Despite 86% of Americans believing they are knowledgeable about their insurance coverage, many hold misconceptions, especially regarding flood damage. The survey highlighted that 56% were unaware that standard homeowners insurance policies do not cover flood damage. This aligns with Insurify's findings, where 60% of homeowners lack flood insurance, mistakenly assuming their regular policy would cover flood-related damages.

Flood exposure remains a pressing concern, with over 9% of U.S. properties facing a yearly flood risk of one foot or more, as noted by the Congressional Budget Office. FEMA reports that a considerable portion of flood insurance claims come from areas with lower flood risks. Cassie Sheets, Insurify's data journalist, emphasized that increasing flood occurrences lead to higher claim frequencies and costs, underlining the importance of reconsidering flood insurance.

Reconstruction Costs and Coverage Misconceptions

The survey also highlighted challenges related to home rebuilding costs. According to Verisk, reconstruction costs rose by 4.6% from April 2023 to April 2024, partly due to more severe weather events. This escalation underscores the need for policyholders to understand how material costs impact their claims. Moreover, many consumers mistakenly believe that their insurance covers materials for voluntary renovations, while only damages from covered events are compensated.

Furthermore, 46% of respondents lacked an inventory of major household items, crucial for claiming personal property losses. In terms of auto insurance, confusion persists regarding business use exclusions and the impact of parking tickets on premiums. Over half of the survey respondents were unaware their auto insurance does not cover business use, and 57% did not realize parking violations do not affect premiums.

Insurance education resources are widely available online, through insurers, marketplaces, and agents to enhance consumer understanding of policy details. Kevin Brandt, executive director of Trusted Choice, highlighted the essential role of independent agents in providing unbiased and personalized policy guidance, enabling consumers to fully grasp their coverage and make informed decisions.
