SCOR's Insights on the Role of GenAI in Life and Health Insurance
SCOR, a leading global reinsurance company, has released a report detailing the integration of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in life and health insurance sectors. The report combines SCOR’s insights with data from a recent industry survey, highlighting the opportunities and challenges insurers face in adopting this transformative technology.
A February 2026 survey by Gallagher found that 80% of life and health insurers have implemented GenAI solutions in at least one key operational area. This statistic underscores GenAI's evolution from a novelty to a vital tool in the insurance industry.
SCOR’s report identifies four significant GenAI use cases gaining traction: enhancing customer engagement, automating unstructured data summaries, improving underwriting and claims processes, and utilizing advanced data analytics. The report emphasizes the need for efficient handling of document-heavy processes, particularly in underwriting and claims, where reviewing medical records can be time-consuming.
Over 100 professionals in underwriting and claims across global markets now use SCOR's AI Assistant—launched in 2023—which processes over a million pages of documents monthly. However, SCOR's findings highlight challenges, such as increased case management times due to necessary verification of AI outputs against original documents, suggesting that returns on AI investments may not be immediate.
Insurers also face fragmented digital infrastructures, particularly those using legacy systems with incompatible databases, which hinder effective AI deployment. Regulatory compliance is another concern, with stringent requirements from the EU AI Act, GDPR, and HIPAA on data protection and non-discrimination, potentially slowing AI project scaling.
MoneyGeek’s findings, supporting SCOR's report, reveal that nearly one-third of health insurers do not evaluate their AI models for racial bias, as reported by NAIC. This regulatory oversight poses a significant risk in the pursuit of fair and transparent AI application.
Authored by Pierre Gilloury, Antoine Ly, and Roberto Castellini, with contributions from Kevin Heera, the report provides a comprehensive view of the current GenAI landscape and its potential within the life and health insurance industry.
