Shifts in Airport Lounge Access Policies for Credit Cards in India
In recent times, the strategy of offering airport lounge access through credit cards in India has undergone significant shifts. Traditionally a perk for affluent travelers, lounge access began including basic credit card offerings to attract customers. However, banks have revised this approach over the past two years by imposing spending requirements and, in some cases, removing the benefit entirely.
The transformation of lounge access economics stems from increased passenger traffic and airport expansions since the pandemic, leading to extensive usage of lounges. As cardholders flocked to lounges, banks incurred higher subsidy costs for these visits. Thus, banks now require significant retail spending on their cards to maintain lounge privileges for users.
Several banks have adjusted their lounge access policies. For example, HDFC Bank has linked complimentary access to spending milestones, affecting its Tata Neu and Regalia cards. ICICI Bank requires cardholders to have spent a certain amount, like Rs. 35,000, in the previous quarter to qualify for lounge visits. Axis Bank has excluded lounge entry on some co-branded cards altogether.
Banks initially expected only frequent flyers to take advantage of lounge access, but the high usage rate by users not engaging in general card spending has prompted a reevaluation. Consequently, banks stratify customers based on spending habits, granting perks to those who demonstrate substantial card usage.
This restructuring has created a tiered market. Basic cards may still permit limited domestic lounge visits, contingent on meeting spending criteria. Mid-tier travel cards typically offer access based on a structured programme with required spending to unlock benefits fully. Ultra-premium cards, which charge high annual fees, tend to maintain unlimited lounge access.
A shift from direct card swipes to voucher-based systems is also evident, requiring cardholders to obtain lounge vouchers via apps after fulfilling spending conditions, a process many banks like HDFC Bank have introduced.
As a result, travelers must now strategically manage their card spending to enjoy lounge privileges. There are also distinct rules between domestic and international lounge access, the former often facilitated through card networks, and the latter typically through programs such as Priority Pass or LoungeKey, each with specific limits and conditions.
