Anti-Fraud Legislative Measures for Medicare and TANF Approval

A series of anti-fraud legislative measures aimed at protecting taxpayer-funded benefits in programs such as Medicare, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and unemployment insurance have gained traction in Washington, D.C. The Ways and Means Committee recently approved these measures following extensive hearings that revealed significant fraud and mismanagement within these programs.

Reports indicate that fraud and mismanagement in Medicare alone contribute to annual losses of approximately $60 billion, translating to nearly $1,000 per Medicare beneficiary each year. Fraudulent activities are notably prevalent in hospice services, home health care, and the distribution of durable medical equipment (DME), with some linked to organized criminal operations. Additionally, concerns have arisen about state-level mismanagement of federal funds meant to aid vulnerable populations, with some resources diverted to cover budgetary shortfalls.

The legislative package ratified by the committee seeks to implement stringent measures to counteract systemic fraud within these social safety net programs. New policies aim to enhance oversight and tighten controls on fund misuse, responding to public demands for greater transparency and accountability.

Committee Chairman Jason Smith emphasized the importance of these measures, highlighting the obligation to protect taxpayers and ensure support reaches legitimate beneficiaries such as seniors and disadvantaged families. The newly approved bills target fraud areas within hospice care, home health services, and the provision of DME while addressing misuse in federal welfare funding.

The approved bills include the Protecting Seniors and Stopping Fraudsters Act (H.R. 8883), which passed with a vote of 27-16; the DME Scammer Prevention Act of 2026 (H.R. 8871), which passed 25-19; the Recover COVID Unemployment Fraud in Banks Act (H.R. 8873), with a unanimous vote of 41-0; and the Preventing Waste, Fraud, and Abuse in TANF Act (H.R. 8872), which passed 23-19. These legislative actions represent a concerted effort to fortify financial compliance and integrity within critical social assistance frameworks.
