AI in Health Insurance: Addressing Disparities Through Technology

Health insurance companies are increasingly leveraging AI technology to streamline claims decisions, prompting discussions on oversight and its impact on healthcare disparities. "These days, in the age of AI, things have become much more automated," states Jude Odu, a healthcare technology authority. Historically, human evaluators assessed claims details, but there's a notable shift towards AI-driven processes.

Jude Odu, the founder of Health Cost IQ and an experienced consultant with major U.S. health insurers, has voiced concerns about relying solely on AI for coverage determinations. In a conversation with Gabriella Paul, he highlighted potential pitfalls and the risk of exacerbating existing healthcare disparities.

Odu recounted how medical professionals previously made rapid decisions on claims, a function now largely replaced by automation. He stressed the importance of a global perspective, noting that different countries handle healthcare costs distinctly compared to the U.S.

The use of AI in healthcare, particularly around health disparities, can potentially amplify existing biases if the algorithms or datasets are flawed. Odu cited United Health Group's acquisition of the AI technology NaVi Health, which faced legal scrutiny due to its predictive inaccuracies frequently overturned upon appeal.

Odu also mentioned an AI appointment system that inadvertently caused longer wait times for Black patients, highlighting biased AI implementation outcomes. Despite these issues, he also pointed out AI's potential, advocating for systems that can comprehensively audit claims data to identify and eliminate discriminatory trends.

AI systems trained with diverse datasets can enhance proactive risk management and improve patient outcomes. While AI enhances operational efficiency, maintaining patient care quality is paramount. Government-backed AI plans are under exploration, with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services already deploying AI technology on a large scale, necessitating robust regulatory frameworks to harness AI's benefits effectively.
