HHS Launches New Advisory Committee on Healthcare Programs
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has launched a new advisory committee to provide insights on financial and delivery aspects of healthcare programs, including Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act Marketplace. The committee's mission is to offer non-binding recommendations that could shape federal healthcare policy and program management.
The committee, chaired by Dr. Clive Fields, had its first meeting which concluded earlier than planned. During the session, members were introduced, bylaws discussed, and the roles of six dedicated workgroups were outlined. These workgroups aim to target areas such as reducing the regulatory burden on Medicare and Medicaid, improving wellness through preventive strategies, and deploying real-time data infrastructures for enhanced provider efficiency.
Key Workgroup Objectives
- Reducing Administrative Burden: This group focuses on streamlining regulatory processes across Medicare and Medicaid.
- MAHA (Make America Healthy Again): Promoting preventive health strategies and enhancing access to holistic care are prime goals.
- Deploying Real-Time Data: This initiative seeks to develop infrastructures for real-time data to boost healthcare quality.
- Improving Care for Vulnerable Populations: Aims to shift Medicaid services from volume-based to value-based models.
- Strengthening Medicare Advantage: Focusing on rewarding improved health outcomes and reducing participation barriers.
- Crushing Fraud, Waste, and Abuse: Leveraging technology to prevent fraudulent activities within the system.
Public comments are being reviewed by these workgroups, with many healthcare organizations actively participating. The committee, composed of members from diverse healthcare sectors, is set to meet quarterly. However, Public Citizen raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest due to members' ties with healthcare organizations and the lack of consumer representation, questioning the diversity balance required under the Federal Advisory Committee Act.
