Utah Woman Convicted of Murdering Husband Over Insurance Payouts
Eric Richins, a Utah businessman, tragically passed away on March 4, 2022, at 39. His wife, Kouri Richins, was accused and later convicted of his murder, allegedly administering fentanyl into his beverage. In the ensuing 14 months until her arrest in May 2023, Kouri received over $1.39 million in life insurance payouts as the beneficiary of policies issued by Auto Owners Insurance Company and TruStage Insurance Company.
Following her conviction, prosecutors are pursuing a court order to compel Kouri to return the insurance funds, asserting that they were fraudulently obtained. Her charges include murder, fraud, and forgery, with accusations of falsifying her husband's signature to acquire additional life insurance coverage. The severity of these actions prompted a prosecutorial recommendation for a life sentence without parole.
Prosecutors presented a memorandum urging the judge to impose a severe sentence, citing the ongoing possession of policy funds and the danger Kouri posed to her family. Testimonies from her children underscored fears for their safety. During trial proceedings, previous attempts on Eric Richins’ life were scrutinized, influencing the jury's decision to also convict Kouri on attempted murder charges. Despite these convictions, Kouri Richins maintains her innocence as she awaits a potential life imprisonment sentence.
