Celebrating Nurses Week: New York's Commitment to Nursing Excellence
In recognition of National Nurses Week, the New York State Department of Health is emphasizing the essential contributions of nurses within the healthcare sector. This observance aligns with Governor Kathy Hochul's proclamation of May as Nurses Month in New York, highlighting the importance of these healthcare professionals.
Dr. James McDonald, the State Health Commissioner, acknowledged the pivotal role of nurses in patient care, especially amid challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic. To support their critical work, the Department is focusing on innovative training and educational initiatives aimed at enhancing the skills of nursing professionals across the state.
Nurturing New York's Nursing Workforce
New York boasts over 493,800 registered professional nurses, along with 65,800 Licensed Practical Nurses and 50,900 Licensed Nurse Practitioners, all integral to achieving quality healthcare outcomes. The Department's Office of Health Care Workforce Innovation is actively working to expand this workforce through programs like the Health Education and Life Skills Program (HELP), which supports nursing education across 21 initiatives.
Additionally, the Nurses Across New York Loan Repayment Program encourages nurses to work in underserved areas by offering loan forgiveness. As part of the 2023 budget measures, this initiative provided crucial support to hundreds of nurses in its initial rounds, with more funding anticipated.
The Department's strategic initiatives are part of a comprehensive effort to enhance New York's healthcare workforce. In 2025, they organized a Stakeholder Summit to address staffing challenges and develop long-term professional growth strategies. As Nurses Week is celebrated, the Department remains committed to expanding opportunities for nurses across New York, acknowledging their unwavering dedication to healthcare.
