Ben Huneke Named 2026 Industry Champion of Retirement Security

Ben Huneke, who leads Morgan Stanley Investment Management, was recognized as the 2026 Industry Champion of Retirement Security by the Insured Retirement Institute (IRI) during its annual conference in Tampa. This prestigious accolade is awarded to individuals who significantly advance retirement security in the United States, focusing on advocacy for public policies aligned with IRI's mission.

Wayne Chopus, IRI’s President and CEO, praised Huneke's efforts in expanding access to retirement solutions and integrating protected lifetime income into financial planning for workers and retirees. Chopus stated, “Throughout his career, he has driven innovation, fostered collaboration, and promoted education to help financial professionals deliver stronger retirement results for clients.”

At Morgan Stanley, Huneke has played a vital role in incorporating insurance and annuities into core portfolio construction and retirement planning strategies. His initiatives have also included the digitization of insurance offerings and the integration of annuities into advisory systems, empowering advisors to deliver comprehensive retirement strategies.

Huneke’s contributions extend beyond his professional role to his involvement with IRI. As a former Board member, treasurer, and chairman, he influenced the strategic direction and growth of the organization. His efforts aimed at reforming IRI’s membership framework and enhancing its advocacy for retirement policy reforms.

Upon receiving the award, Huneke expressed his appreciation, stating, “Retirement security is about giving people confidence that their savings, investments, and income solutions can work together to support them throughout retirement.”

Huneke's career includes notable positions within Morgan Stanley’s wealth management divisions, where he served as Head of Investment Solutions and Chief Operating Officer of Field Management. His experience also includes management consulting with McKinsey & Company and investment banking at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. Additionally, he contributes to the Investment Company Institute and The JED Foundation, emphasizing emotional health initiatives.

Chopus further commended Huneke, adding, “Ben’s leadership has helped bridge the worlds of asset management and insurance, strengthening the system that supports retirement security.” The Champion of Retirement Security Award, established in 2013 by IRI, initially honored policymakers but has expanded to recognize private-sector leaders contributing significantly to securing retirement futures for Americans. The 2026 Annual Conference boasted high attendance, attracting over 950 industry professionals to Tampa.
