Parsley Health Joins Major Insurance Networks to Expand Access to Functional Medicine
Parsley Health has recently announced its integration into the network of major insurance companies in the United States, including UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, and Cigna. Known for its focus on functional medicine, Parsley Health operates virtually from New York City, addressing the root causes of health symptoms. Patients begin by sharing comprehensive health information, followed by consultations with clinicians, advanced lab testing, and personalized care plans encompassing diet, physical activity, stress management, and supplements. The care model includes follow-up visits and ongoing communication with the care team. Parsley Health caters to patients dealing with various health issues such as autoimmune diseases, metabolic disorders, infertility, menopause, and gastrointestinal problems.
The company's inclusion in the insurance networks of providers like Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, BlueCross BlueShield, Humana, and Centene allows coverage for medical consultations, diagnostics, and medications. Parsley Health initially partnered with insurers in New York in 2023 through a collaboration with Mount Sinai Hospital before expanding to California. This recent development extends their in-network coverage nationwide, reportedly broadening their reach to approximately 150 million people, increasing insurance availability tenfold.
Dr. Robin Berzin, Parsley Health’s founder and CEO, emphasized the significance of this expansion, noting that it integrates functional medicine into mainstream insurance coverage on a wide scale. This transition marks a pivotal shift from traditional models of reactive healthcare towards proactive, comprehensive management of chronic diseases. Unlike Parsley Health, other companies in the functional medicine sector, such as Function Health and Forum Health, do not currently accept insurance.
The timing of this development aligns with ongoing challenges of chronic disease in the U.S., where 75% of adults suffer from at least one chronic condition. These diseases account for 90% of the nation's annual healthcare expenditure, valued at $4.9 trillion. Parsley Health aims to address these issues through its functional medicine platform and reports that 89% of its members experience significant symptom improvements within a year, alongside a 23% reduction in care costs for high-expense patient groups.
Moving forward, Parsley Health plans to strengthen relationships with insurance providers and broaden the demographic reached through its telehealth services. The company's long-term goal includes further expansion of insurance coverage for its specialized care model.
