DOJ Launches West Coast Health Care Fraud Strike Force to Combat Fraud

The Department of Justice (DOJ) initiated a new enforcement effort on April 30, 2026, with the launch of the West Coast Health Care Fraud Strike Force. This initiative is part of the National Fraud Enforcement Division's comprehensive strategy aimed at combating sophisticated health care fraud. The task force brings together resources from U.S. Attorney's Offices in Arizona, Nevada, and Northern California, along with DOJ's Health Care Fraud Section.

Operating under the established Health Care Fraud Strike Force framework, this effort utilizes centralized data analytics and early prosecutorial action to swiftly investigate and address fraudulent activities. Since 2007, this approach has involved region-specific strike forces collaborating with the FBI, the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General, and other agencies. The existing Health Care Fraud Strike Force in Los Angeles will continue its operations.

The DOJ announcement highlighted a rise in complex health care fraud cases across Western states, involving telehealth, digital health platforms, substance abuse treatment, and medical supplies. Craig H. Missakian, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California, identified Silicon Valley as a hub for tech-driven fraud schemes, pointing to recent convictions linked to Adderall distribution fraud.

This initiative underscores the DOJ’s commitment to intensify anti-fraud measures under current administrative directives, with a strong focus on health care fraud. Led by Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald, the Fraud Division plans to robustly apply the False Claims Act. This renewed focus, including the reinvigoration of the FCA Working Group, aims to target health care-related frauds. Industry professionals and companies should anticipate increased regulatory scrutiny and potential enforcement actions from both the DOJ and whistleblowers.
