Serious Thruway Accident Highlights Importance of Traffic Safety and Compliance

A tragic accident on the Thruway in Saugerties claimed the life of a Pittsfield, MA resident and left six others injured. On April 26, New York State Police responded to an emergency involving a driver heading against traffic on I-87 northbound between exits 19 and 20. The incident highlights the importance of vehicular safety and adherence to regulatory compliance on highways.

Preliminary reports reveal that 42-year-old Joseph Mensah-Otoo was driving a 2025 Toyota, which collided with three vehicles traveling in the correct direction. The vehicles involved included a 2022 Honda, a 2020 BMW, and a 2017 Ford F-150. Mensah-Otoo was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Six individuals sustained injuries and were transported to HealthAlliance Hospital in Kingston. The injured parties include a 37-year-old from New City, a 59-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman from Cohoes, alongside three 19-year-olds from Dalton and Hinsdale, MA. State Police have described their injuries as non-life-threatening.
