Travelers Expands Homeowners Insurance Coverage in California

The Travelers Companies is set to expand its homeowners insurance coverage across California, integrating predictive wildfire catastrophe models and incorporating reinsurance costs into pricing strategies. This proposal, submitted to the California Department of Insurance, is part of the Sustainable Insurance Strategy aimed at boosting insurance availability within the state. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance the competitive landscape for insurers operating in high-risk areas.

Michael Klein, executive vice president and president of personal insurance at Travelers, highlighted, “Offering risk-based pricing for coverage facilitates a fair, competitive and healthy market for all participants.” This pricing strategy aims to support Travelers' operations in California, allowing them to meet customer commitments while adhering to responsible underwriting practices. Additionally, Travelers plans to enhance discounts for homeowners implementing wildfire mitigation measures, such as ember-resistant vents and Class A roofing.

The Sustainable Insurance Strategy has reignited interest among insurers to reconsider their presence in California. The initiative, spearheaded by California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara and the California Department of Insurance, intends to revitalize the state’s insurance market. New proposals, including revisions to the rate hearings intervenor process, reflect efforts to attract carriers back to the region. In response, carriers like CSAA Mercury Insurance are expanding coverage in high-risk zones, contingent on approved rate increases, as part of a broader regulatory strategy to stabilize the market.
