MultiCare Negotiates Contracts with Premera Blue Cross and Regence

MultiCare Health System, based in Tacoma, is currently engaging in crucial contract negotiations with Premera Blue Cross and Regence. This development may affect coverage for numerous patients if agreements are not reached in time. According to a notice released by Premera on April 16, MultiCare has issued a termination notice effective May 31, 2026, impacting all of Premera's commercial and individual plans. Notably, members with Medicare Supplement coverage will remain unaffected.

Overlake Medical Center in Bellevue is excluded from this potential termination. However, if the termination proceeds, it will have statewide implications for Premera patients utilizing MultiCare's facilities and providers, including Yakima Memorial Hospital. This uncertainty highlights the importance of timely negotiations to maintain healthcare access.

Current negotiations with Regence are centered around contracts impacting commercial members in Grays Harbor, Thurston, and Yakima counties. Failure to reach an agreement by May 10, 2026, will render MultiCare out-of-network for Regence members at some key locations, including MultiCare Yakima Valley and MultiCare Capital Medical Center. The stakes of these negotiations underscore the regional impact of such contract outcomes.

Negotiations have historically been contentious between MultiCare, Regence, and Premera, with new terms only reached in 2024. In 2025, Regence communicated its intention to transition providers for its individual-plan network in Pierce County. MultiCare has voiced concerns over reimbursement rates from Premera, indicating they are lagging behind rising operational costs, inflation, and workforce demands. Conversely, Premera emphasizes the necessity to manage affordability and address escalating healthcare costs across different regions.

The proposed contract termination poses additional consequences for Blue Cross Blue Shield members under the Federal Employee Program, who rely on MultiCare services. Notification letters have already been sent to these members. Premera reassures those undergoing treatment for serious or chronic conditions may qualify for temporary continued care benefits. Furthermore, Premera has provided guidance for members with BlueCard coverage through independent Blue Cross Blue Shield plans to verify available in-network alternatives should MultiCare exit the network.
