Navigating Heat-Related Insurance Claims Amid Rising Temperatures

Large regions in India, including Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, are grappling with intense heatwave conditions. As temperatures soar, healthcare facilities are witnessing a surge in heat-related illnesses, primarily impacting outdoor workers and vulnerable populations.

In insurance contexts, heatstroke is not usually outlined as a distinct peril in Indian policies. Coverage hinges on the categorization of the resulting medical condition and applicable policy exclusions. Narendra Bharindwal, President of the Insurance Brokers Association of India, clarifies that heatstroke fatalities are generally processed as standard claims under life insurance, except in cases of fraud, material misrepresentation, or specific exclusions during the contestability period.

Health insurance policies generally acknowledge claims for hospitalization due to conditions like dehydration and kidney stress caused by heat, unless specifically excluded. Insurers typically concentrate on the underlying medical condition rather than the heatwave as the activating factor. Disputes often involve inadequate medical documentation or unclear causality, including factors such as misdiagnosis and incomplete hospital records.

Surinder Bhagat of Prudent Insurance Brokers highlights that pre-existing condition clauses can complicate claims, especially when ailments like diabetes or hypertension exacerbate organ failure during high temperatures. In life insurance, disputes may arise when death certificates list indirect causes, such as cardiac arrest, without expressly linking them to heatstroke.

To minimize the risk of claim denial, policyholders should be diligent about exclusions, medically necessary care, disclosure of pre-existing conditions, and comprehensive documentation. Sarita Joshi of Probus advises careful review of policy definitions related to heat exposure. As extreme temperatures become more common, policyholders must meticulously document medical causes and adhere to policy requirements to secure successful claim settlements.
