Medicare Advantage Changes Affecting Patients: InterMed's Shift

Pamela Smith of North Yarmouth recently received an unexpected notification from InterMed stating they will cease accepting her Martin’s Point Medicare Advantage insurance effective January. The email has left Smith uncertain about her healthcare options moving forward. This shift by InterMed highlights significant changes in their insurance carrier agreements, impacting numerous patients and raising concerns over regulatory compliance requirements and the delivery of patient care.

InterMed, a healthcare provider based in Portland, announced the change well in advance, providing patients with over eight months to evaluate their insurance options. According to Dr. Phyllidia Ku-Ruth, InterMed's board president, the decision followed careful evaluation due to complications with the existing agreement that threatened sustainable practice conditions. This policy change will affect approximately 4,500 patients reliant on Martin’s Point Medicare Advantage, underscoring the importance of strategic risk management in healthcare service offerings.

Despite offering both healthcare services and insurance plans, Martin’s Point Health Care was not consulted about this development prior to the announcement. Steve Amendo, speaking on behalf of Martin's Point, indicated the lack of preceding discussions. Medicare Advantage, which is often chosen by individuals over 65 due to its additional benefits beyond traditional Medicare, is now prompting InterMed patients to consider new paths. Possible actions include switching insurers, finding a new provider, or paying out of pocket at InterMed until December 31. Mitchell Stein, a health policy analyst, pointed out that a range of Medicare Advantage plans exist, offering similar benefits and allowing patients time to make informed choices.
