Improving Claims Accuracy with CMS's New Resource for Oncologists

Physician practices can now access a new resource aimed at improving claims accuracy and addressing AI-driven prior authorization delays. This initiative, driven by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), offers oncologists valuable data to enhance coverage and reimbursement procedures by publicly reporting prior authorization (PA) rates.

According to Dr. Benjamin Durkee of the University of Wisconsin–Madison's Department of Human Oncology, prior authorization represents a major challenge for oncology practices. A survey by the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) revealed that 92% of radiation oncology providers encountered treatment delays due to PA, with 33% abandoning treatment in certain cases.

The Community Oncology Alliance reports that complexity in step therapy and PA requirements has increased, negatively impacting patient care. Nearly 90% of surveyed professionals noted they have added staff specifically to manage the administrative workload over the past five years.

Regulatory Compliance and Enhanced Transparency

To tackle these challenges, CMS now requires payers to report specific PA metrics to improve accountability and transparency. The metrics focus on the rates of standard and expedited PA requests' approvals, denials, and processing times, excluding drugs.

Dr. Grace A. Lin of the University of California San Francisco highlights the need for further transparency beyond mere approval rates to better assess the appropriateness of PA decisions. Although the current requirements have limitations, they could motivate changes in payer practices.

Leveraging Data and AI for Improved Outcomes

Physicians can utilize this data to benchmark payer performance and enhance practice workflows. The information can help in determining which payers require immediate appeals based on high denial rates. Practices are encouraged to build internal data alongside CMS' reports for detailed payer-specific insights.

Dr. Maria A. Mirt S. from MIRT MD Consulting emphasizes the growing role of AI-driven platforms that cross-reference data and provide real-time authorization insights. These technologies can support practices in managing high volumes of PAs, offering predictive approval data and enhancing staff efficiency.

Continued advocacy for detailed PA data reporting remains critical. This information not only aids providers in optimizing operations but also supports regulatory improvements in the PA process management. The implementation of these resources and technologies is a significant step forward in mitigating PA burdens and enhancing service delivery in the insurance industry.
