Ocasio-Cortez Critiques Health Insurers Amid DOJ Investigations

In a recent interview, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez delivered strong criticism of U.S. health insurance providers, particularly those offering Medicare Advantage plans. Her comments followed Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s congressional hearings, highlighting key concerns within the industry.

Ocasio-Cortez cited ongoing Department of Justice investigations into UnitedHealth Group, the nation's largest health insurer, over allegations of overbilling Medicare. The investigations also probe whether the company's Optum subsidiary adversely affected market dynamics for independent healthcare providers.

Highlighting the DOJ's findings, Ocasio-Cortez underscored challenges linked to reduced healthcare funding. She noted the difficulties consumers face accessing necessary medical services and medications due to escalating costs.

The Kaiser Family Foundation reported a significant 6% increase in health insurance premiums for 2025, with predictions for an 11% rise in 2026. This increase poses a financial burden, coinciding with declining ACA Marketplace enrollments and reduced Medicaid funding and ACA subsidies.

Addressing the Senate, Secretary Kennedy highlighted that while overall Medicaid spending is set to grow, allocations will fall short of previous projections, indicating substantial budgetary changes. During a Senate budget hearing, Ocasio-Cortez and Kennedy expressed shared concerns over the financial practices of health insurance companies, with Kennedy agreeing that these companies might be excessively profiting.
