Advocacy for Sleep Medicine: AASM's Legislative Engagement

On April 14, members of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) gathered in Washington, D.C. to champion policies related to sleep medicine. Representatives from various AASM committees, including the Advocacy Committee and the Coding and Reimbursement Advisory Committee, met with lawmakers to discuss critical issues affecting the field. The event concluded with a reception for members and their guests, underscoring the importance of community and collaboration.

A major topic of discussion was the decrease in physician payment rates, which has significant implications for practitioners. AASM members stressed the necessity for enduring reforms in Medicare regulatory compliance concerning payments for sleep services. Congressional offices showed interest in legislative changes to the existing medical payment framework, highlighting a potential shift in policy to address these financial challenges.

The ongoing debate between standard time and daylight saving time was another key point of focus. AASM members advocated for permanent standard time, emphasizing its benefits for healthy sleep patterns and improved safety. Their expertise was recognized by legislators, who took note of the strong arguments for this legislative shift.

In addition to discussions around time regulation, the AASM also highlighted the need for funding rural residency programs. The proposed H.R. 6468, or the Rural Residency Planning and Development Act of 2025, aims to support such initiatives, including contributions to the sleep medicine field. This proposal recognizes the importance of addressing healthcare disparities in rural areas and gained attention from congressional offices.

Furthermore, discussions covered topics like AI-driven prior authorization delays, funding for sleep research, and visa fee relief for physicians. The AASM organizes at least one Capitol Hill Day annually to empower direct advocacy by members on sleep medicine and related public health policies. Members are encouraged to participate in online campaigns that focus on legislative priorities.

The AASM Political Action Committee (PAC) plays a pivotal role in supporting these advocacy efforts. During Capitol Hill Day, PAC representatives engaged with legislators on significant issues in sleep medicine. Dr. Colleen Lance, an AASM PAC Advisory Panel member, emphasized the critical nature of physician involvement in policy advocacy, noting that the PAC ensures the representation of the profession’s interests.

AASM urges its members to contribute to the PAC and join the Capitol Club to further their advocacy activities. Such engagement remains essential to advancing the interests of the sleep medicine community and enhancing legislative influence.
