Doxo's 2026 Cost of Bills Index Reports Significant Changes in Household Expenses
doxo has published its 2026 Cost of Bills Index (COBI) Report, illustrating the disparities in household expenses across the United States. According to data from doxo, significant variation exists in costs depending on location, with states such as California, Hawaii, and Massachusetts experiencing expenses up to 38% higher than the national median. Conversely, residents in West Virginia, Mississippi, and Arkansas benefit from costs that are as much as 47% below the median. The report aligns with doxo’s 2026 U.S. Household Bill Pay Report, revealing that an average household in the U.S. now allocates nearly $25,000 annually to essential bills.
As living expenses rise nationwide, the report notes an aggregate increase in household spending to a total of approximately $5.03 trillion. The typical household currently spends about $2,083 monthly on basic bills alone. Notably, North Carolina faced the largest year-over-year rise in household billing costs at 7%, with New Hampshire experiencing a 5.4% increase. Understanding these cost trends is vital for households making financial decisions amid escalating expenses.
COBI derives its findings from doxo's comprehensive bill payment data, covering the most common household bill categories to provide a benchmark for evaluating the cost of living across different geographic regions. Steve Shivers, Co-Founder and CEO of doxo, emphasized the importance of localized data in aiding consumers to understand and manage financial responsibilities, stating that COBI offers a valuable means to compare essential household bill costs across various areas in the U.S.
The 2026 COBI Report ranks the most and least expensive states based on bill costs. California, topping the list, exceeds the national median by 38%, followed by Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Maryland. On the flip side, Oklahoma and Alabama are among the least expensive, both 23% below the national median, with Arkansas, Mississippi, and West Virginia also reporting significantly lower costs.
The report also highlights U.S. cities, listing San Jose, New York, and San Francisco amongst the most costly, while Pittsburgh, Dayton, and Detroit rank as more affordable options. COBI, part of doxoINSIGHTS, illuminates the financial dynamics affecting households by assessing payments in categories like utilities, insurance, and loans.
doxo's network supports payments to over 120,000 providers, capturing a wide cross-section of real payments that reflect consumer behavior across the nation. This data, encompassing diverse income brackets and areas, gives an accurate view of household bill payments, focusing solely on consumer-paid recurring obligations. This methodology contrasts with traditional industry estimates that often include employer-paid expenses, offering a clear picture of domestic financial commitments.
