Great American Healthcare Plan: Empowering Consumers in Healthcare
In Washington, D.C., Representative Eric Burlison from Missouri has introduced the Great American Healthcare Plan, a legislative effort to reform the U.S. healthcare system by reducing costs and enhancing individual control over healthcare finances. This proposed bill aligns with previous reforms, emphasizing patient-centric care, transparency, and competition to transform healthcare delivery.
Rep. Burlison highlighted that the existing healthcare system imposes high costs on Americans while limiting their control over healthcare spending. The new plan aims to empower individuals with ownership of their healthcare costs, promoting clearer pricing in the marketplace. Congressman Tom Barrett from Michigan co-sponsors the bill, which structures reforms around four fundamental principles, encouraging decisions driven by market dynamics.
Several organizations support the proposed legislation. The Great American Health Alliance, led by Keith Nahigian, views the reform as an opportunity to shift power back to consumers, enhancing affordability and enabling better value. Daniel Perrin of the HSA Coalition pointed out the bill's potential to alleviate financial burdens on Medicare beneficiaries and ACA bronze plan participants by expanding access to Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), including for those on Medicare and Medicaid.
Furthermore, Kevin McKechnie of the ABA HSA Council and Randy Hultgren of the Alliance for Healthcare Sharing Ministries endorsed the initiative. It aims to facilitate access to HSAs, allowing more people to save for healthcare needs while addressing tax inequities faced by members of Health Care Sharing Ministries. The Great American Healthcare Plan seeks systemic reform, enhancing consumer empowerment, expanding healthcare savings options, and ensuring equitable tax treatment across all healthcare models.
