Understanding Insurance Misconceptions: PEMCO Survey Findings

A recent survey by PEMCO Mutual Insurance unveils notable misconceptions about insurance coverage among Pacific Northwest residents. The survey, focusing on Washington and Oregon, evaluated basic insurance knowledge in areas such as liability, rate considerations, and claims processes.

The findings reveal significant gaps in insurance understanding. Less than a third of respondents answered questions correctly, especially regarding liability responsibilities when using a friend's vehicle. Only 22% understood that liability can vary based on circumstances, while many incorrectly assumed their policy or their friend's policy would always cover any damages.

Confusion also exists around property damage claims. Only 26% of participants correctly identified that a homeowner's policy typically covers damage from a neighbor's fallen tree. Additionally, just 18% understood that homeowners insurance, not auto insurance, covers stolen personal belongings from a car. Furthermore, misconceptions about factors affecting auto insurance rates persist, with only 32% aware that a car's color doesn't influence premiums.

In examining costly home insurance claims, only 24% of respondents correctly identified water damage as a prevalent issue in the Northwest, while many mistakenly cited house fires. PEMCO spokesperson Jennifer Hawton emphasized the need for policy review and insurer consultation to avoid unforeseen financial challenges.

Despite these misunderstandings, the survey indicates some areas of better insight. A majority, 60%, are aware of coverage during accidents with uninsured drivers. Over half of the respondents understand the regulatory nature of rate-setting in Washington and Oregon. Additionally, 46% correctly acknowledged discounts for anti-theft devices, low mileage, and academic performance, though only 20% recognized raising deductibles as a primary cost-reduction strategy.

The PEMCO survey, conducted by Qualtrics, targeted residents in Seattle Metro and Portland Metro, achieving a 95% confidence level in its findings.
