Virginia's House Bill 1214: Reducing Insulin Costs and Improving Accessibility

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has praised the signing of House Bill 1214 in Virginia, which aims to make insulin more affordable while setting limits on cost-sharing for diabetes-related medical supplies. Governor Abigail Spanberger has ushered Virginia into becoming the sixth state to adopt such cost-reduction measures. Starting July 1, 2026, the maximum out-of-pocket expense for insulin under state-regulated health insurance plans will decrease from $50 to $35, also affecting the cost of other diabetes management tools.

According to Monica Billger, director of state government affairs at the ADA, the new legislation marks a crucial step in enhancing insulin accessibility and affordability. Billger noted it is unacceptable for individuals to choose between purchasing insulin and meeting basic needs. The ADA acknowledged the efforts of Governor Spanberger, Delegate Karrie Delaney, and the Virginia legislature in prioritizing the health of those with diabetes.

The ADA has consistently championed initiatives to cap insulin costs and expand access to diabetes care solutions. Virginia's legislative action is a significant component of a growing national effort to tackle cost-related challenges and ensure unwavering access to essential diabetes treatments.
